27/04/13 10:30-17:00 Falmouth CRT spent the day with our colleagues from Porthoustock CRT and the Fire Service from Truro and St Austell undertaking mud rescue training at Newham Ind Est, Truro. The initial brief was an animal stuck in the mud. On scene RV’d with the Truro Fire Service who were the initial responders and both OIC’s from Falmouth CRT and FRS working together to ensure safe working area was in place. For exercise purpose the animal was a domestic ‘dog’ although in reality was a FRS dummy. Both FRS and the mud team deployed technicians across the mud using mud stretchers and mud mats and making good progress, while remaining team members from Porthoustock, FRS and Falmouth CRT ensuring safety and protection checking for up river and down river danger, as well as logistics, command and control roles.

Due to the location of the ‘CAS’ neither team recovered the ‘CAS’ however recovered to shore and continued with the train sharing ideas, processes and best practise.

Again, thanks to everyone involved for a really enjoyable and worthwhile exercise, and FRS for supplying the lunch, very much appreciated.

18/04/13 @ 1923 – Team paged to a report of a person stuck in the mud at Gorran Gorras Creek. MRCC Falmouth kept the caller on the line until we arrived. As we were getting the mud rescue equipment ready and PPE we found we had around a half mile walk. MRCC Falmouth reported that the tide had reached the casualty and was starting to rise up his legs.

Once down to the casualty 2x Mud Rescue Technicians deployed and and started to extricate the casualty using our specialist equipment. By the time we’d finished the water had risen over the casualties knees.

We ‘pepper potted’ the casualty using the mud stretchers back to the shore and kept him warm until the arrival of the ILB for transport back to the station for a warm up.

Ordinarily we’d have used a winch but due to the todal conditions and distance from the shore, it was decided this was the best way back.

After assisting the ILB to shore we stood down to return to station.

After carrying all of the equipment back to the vehicle and RTB, cleaned down and ready for service by 2125

The casualty was on a university project taking pictures of wading birds in the creek and got caught out by the soft pockets of mud and rising tide.

Thanks to the ILB crew for helping us back with some heavier kit!!
